ESG Overview

The Environmental Safe Guard System (ESGTM) was developed to provide a safe, reliable and cost effective alternative to traditional subsea drilling practices, The System combines familiar field proven equipment into an evolutionary new system. Traditionally offshore drilling is not always the most cost effective. Another method being utilized is a floating vessel with surface BOP's in place of subsea BOP's. A high-pressure riser is run from the surface BOP's to the sea floor where it is cemented in place. This means that the rig is essentially cemented in place, allowing no practical means of disconnecting in the event of an emergency. Also, if anything damages the high-pressure riser while drilling, fluids in the riser escape to the environment.

The ESG System evolves one step further, utilizing a floating vessel equipped with a combination of subsea and surface modules. The subsea portion is used to shear, seal and disconnect from the seabed while the traditional surface BOP stack handles all the well control functions. The subsea stack consists of upper and lower wellhead connectors, a ram-type BOP with shearing blind rams and a mini (acoustic, electric, ROV-actuated, or hydraulic) control system. The subsea portion is tied back to a traditional surface BOP stack via a high-pressure riser system. In the event of an emergency, the control system is used to signal the subsea BOP to shear the pipe. Once the shearing blind rams shear and seal off the bore, the control system is used to signal the upper connector to disconnect, allowing the rig to be moved safely off location with minimal loss of drilling or well fluids.

  • Reduced size and weight
When compared with a traditional subsea BOP stack, the ESG System is considerably smaller and lighter enabling the use of a second or third generation rig even in deep water.
  • Enables well shut-in
The well can be quickly shut-in at the sea floor and disconnected from the riser or casing above it.
  • Increase rig safety
The rig can quickly and safely evacuate the well location.
  • Protects the environment
The ESG System provides a protective barrier to minimize fluids from escaping into the environment.
  • Sea floor ESG disconnect
The ESG System can be disconnected at either the upper or lower subsea connector.
  • Field proven products
The ESG System incorporates all of the field-proven products you rely on from Cameron, including riser tensioners, surface and subsea BOPs, gate valves, fastlock and collet connectors, and controls systems.
